The journey of Allen Schwerdt (Al) is like many of us, a misguided step from which fate took him by the hand on to the right path. He started his study in Tai Chi at a local Tai Chi studio in the 80's. He followed T.T's advice and didn't invest only in teachers or books, but consumed all he could from all the sources he could get. Sadly, this was not a studio that was teaching real traditional Tai Chi. Still, being out there showing the universe he wanted to learn, when he was ready, the teacher presented themself. That day came when he was presented with the opportunity to go to a seminar being lead by his favorite author and internationally renowned authority on Tai Chi, Stuart Alve Olson. During this (a Cultivating the Chi seminar) Stuart noticed Al and his standing ability. Al, wanting to not impose, tried to leave quietly at the end. Stuart cut him off at the door and gave him one of the biggest compliments you can ever give to a Tai Chi practitioner. "I like the way you stand." From here Al was invited to attend a seminar in The Cities, after which Stuart explained for reasons that could not be explained, he had to teach Al. From here Al began his 5 year apprenticeship with Stuart in the art of Tai Chi. After his graduation he decided to take the art back to his home town of Duluth, MN.

In His Own Words
I began studying meditation, yoga, hard martial arts, and herbalism since my early teens. This set me on a path, which led to my being chosen to study under Stuart Alve Olson, one of the two proteges to T.T. Liang. Stuart brought me though many experiences, which proved that lineage means everything. In his words, he passed onto me the seeds of T'ai Chi, which only a true linage teacher can do. I've been passing this experience along now for well over twenty years. Stuart has never failed as a deep wellspring of wisdom and knowledge and is still supportive in my efforts to this day. One of his greatest lessons was that of compassion, a most fulfilling path. I wish to thank all teachers and students that contribute to this art.
Sincerely,
Chupa Chia
(A name given to me by Stuart, my teacher.)
